| Professional Exchange : Exchange Conditions of LeMSIC(Lebanon) | |
| Level of studies | Applying students should have started their CLINICAL TRAINING. |
| Type of Clerkship | Clerkships offered are all clinical. Pre-clinical clerkships are offered through SCORE. |
| Languages | English is OBLIGATORY. An English Language Certificate from the exchange student’s university is required with all applications. In case it appears upon arrival that the capacity of the student to talk and understand English is mediocre, the student will be refused. |
| Duration of Clerkship | Clerkships are for one month duration (calendar month). Exceptions are upon availability. |
| Working Conditions | Exchange students are required to attend a MINIMUM OF 5 HOURS A DAY, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. IF NOT COMPLIANT THE EXCHANGE CAN BE TERMINATED. To acquire the IFMSA certificate, the student must have filled 80% OF THE SCOPE HANDBOOK AND THE IFMSA.NET EVALUATION FORM.
We expect the student to participate actively and seriously in department activities. Exchange students are not covered by malpractice insurance in Lebanese hospitals. Thus, they are mainly OBSERVERS. They are however required to attend and actively participate in all bedside rounds, conferences and case discussions. |
| Disciplines | 1. Anesthesiology
3. ENT-Head and Neck Surgery 4. Family Medicine (for last year medical students) 5. Internal Medicine: - Ward (Floor) - Out Patient Clinics *in all above mentioned electives, rounds and discussions are in English. It is possible to include visits to subspecialty clinics and attend conferences depending on the student’s interest in the following fields: a. Cardiology - for LAST YEAR medical students ONLY b. Endocrinology c. Gastroenterology d. Hematology/Oncology e. Infectious Diseases f. Nephrology/Hypertension g. Pulmonary Medicine h. Rheumatology/Geriatrics i. Neurology 6. Obstetrics and Gynecology · Delivery Suite · Gynecology · Obstetrics * Students can spend 1 month in any of the above mentioned divisions, or can rotate in the 3 divisions in 1 month. * OFFICIAL GRADES of the student MUST be provided for this department 7. Ophthalmology - for LAST YEAR medical students ONLY 8. Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (all year Except in August) 9. Pediatrics - Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Pediatrics Ward including visits to Out Patient Clinics * Students can spend 1 month in any of the above mentioned divisions, or can rotate in the 2 divisions in 1 month. 10. Surgery - General Surgery - Vascular and Pediatric Surgery - Orthopedic Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Urology - Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiac Supportive Unit - Neurosurgery * Any division includes visits to the Operating Room, Out Patient Clinics as well as conferences and discussions. 11. | Periods & Towns | Electives are available only in the capital of Lebanon, Beirut at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
We offer CALENDAR MONTHS clinical clerkships ONLY. Different periods are not insured due to hospital and lodging restrictions. A specific mail has to be sent to the NEO for arrangements AT LEAST three months in advance. We receive students all year long. NOTE: For the month of January, we do NOT accept students before January 5. WE DO NOT ACCEPT STUDENTS IF THE AUB APPLICATION FORM WAS NOT SENT AT LEAST 3 MONTHS IN ADVANCE. |
| Application documents & deadline | eAFs for July/August/September must be submitted by FEBRUARY 15.
For July and August: all the required documents must be presented at the March GA For the remaining months: all the required documents must be presented AT LEAST 16 weeks prior to the start of the exchange. We do not guarantee acceptance for applications that do not meet the above deadlines (especially in Surgery, Medicine, and Pediatrics). The documents should include (all in ENGLISH): 1. TWO PRINTED COPIES OF THE A.U.B. Application Form. It is the MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENT without which NO STUDENT IS ACCEPTED!! It should be submitted during the MARCH MEETING with no exceptions. It should be signed and stamped by the dean's office of the student's original university. THIS DOCUMENT IS MANDATORY It can be accessed throught the following link: http://www.lemsic.org/files/AUBMC%20Visiting%20Student%20Form.pdf It must be filled, printed and sent scanned to the NEO. 2. Two Photographs along with AF (Please attach but don't paste them to AF) 3. All the other documents must be submitted as digital documents on a CD in the March meeting or sent by email to the NEO (see below section on digital documents required) Required equipments to bring: ·Stethoscope,white gown and formal dress code(pants,shirt & TIES for men, NO flip flops and NO sandals allowed in the hospital!) |

| Insurance | It is a MUST to have health insurance during one's stay in Lebanon. We do not bear responsibility for any student who has no medical coverage. |
| Pocket Money | We do not offer any pocket money. |
| Board & Lodging | Both board and lodging are free on bilateral basis. Lodging is in furnished apartments in the vicinity of the hospital. Students have to respect the regulations of the hotel as far as visitors and noise are concerned. Meals will be offered at the hospital's cafeteria on daily basis (weekends included!) three times a day!
We are not responsible for friends, family or pets. UNILATERAL EXCHANGE FEE is 450 US dollars. 50 U.S dollars are taken as a deposit upon arrival, refunded upon returning the room key at the end of the exchange and making sure no damage was done to the hostel properties. |
| Social Program | Social Program is 100% FREE!!!
Social program is ONLY available during July and August. During the rest of the year, activities would be available and offered by local students on personal basis. Social program consists of 3 full days of sightseeing and outdoor activities in addition to a large variety of recreational facilities, clubs and events on AUB campus. A National Food and drinking Party will be held in first days of the months of July and August, so make sure to get your own cultural items to Lebanon. |
| Substitutions | Substitutions can be made on same department/same period basis. Notice of substitution should be sent by e-mail no later than 4 weeks prior to the date of clerkship. An AUB Application Form for the substitute should be sent no later than 3 weeks prior to the clerkship by EMAIL. The CA of the substituted student is to be brought by the new student in case there was no time to send a new CA, plus a card of substitution signed by the NEO. |
| Cancellations | We prefer substitutions to cancellations. Please inform us as soon as possible about cancellations. |
| Visas | A visa is to be acquired on arrival at the airport for students who are holders of a passport of the following countries:
Australia, Canada, EU countries, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, USA. Students coming from other countries need to get their visas from the Lebanese Embassy in their country. | Special remarks | If needed and upon request we can arrange to contact the embassy to facilitate the visa procedure.
Please note that students who have an Israeli visa on their passport have to apply for the visa at the Lebanese Embassy in their country 2 months prior to the date of their clerkship. Age Limitation: only students between age of 20 and 30 years are accepted. Exchange Students should inform NEO as well as assigned contact persons by e-mail about the name of Airlines, flight number, date and time of arrival. Students not showing up at the arranged date cause a lot of trouble and will lose accommodation and/or position at the hospital after 3 days without any announcement. Students who suddenly show up without any prior notice or any document (AF, CA, CC) are NOT guaranteed places in the hospital or lodging. |
