  Professional Exchange : Exchange Conditions of MMSA(Malta)

Type of Clerkship Clinical - for preclinicals please contact the NEO on neo.nore@mmsa.org.mt
Languages English is the working language used during clerkship. The students carrying out their exchange in Malta MUST be proficient in communicating using the English Language. Students who cannot communicate adequately in English WILL have their clerkships cancelled.
Duration of Clerkship Strictly ONE CALENDAR MONTH, no mid months accepted!! No clerkships in May and June.
Working Conditions Five to six hours a day for five days a week (8am–2pm, Mon-Fri).

Periods & Towns All clerkships are carried out at Mater Dei Hospital, Msida EXCEPT Dermatology and Oncology which are carried out at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital in Valletta and Geriatrics which is carried out at Karen Grech , St. Luke's Hospital in Pieta.
Application documents & deadline The application should include:
· 3 passport size photos
· A copy of Health Insurance
· The Language Certificate
· Proof of university enrolment

.Immunisation form -this includes Hepatitis B, TB, MRSA, varicella and rubella (rubella for females only), and is available on the ifmsa-neo files section. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE NEW / LATEST DOCUMENT IS USED. This must be received by NEO 5 weeks before start of exchange or may be subject to cancellation.

Insurance Health insurance is needed only. For EU members , the EU health card is accepted.
Pocket Money None
Board & Lodging Lodging will be provided free of charge to all Medical Students accepted on an exchange.

Lodging consists of apartments. 4 to 6 students per apartment. Some apartments require you to catch a bus to the hospital

Board: 1 meal per day for bilaterals only.

Students are required to sign the rules' form, and bilaterals pay a non-refundable fee of 15 Euro for breakages. This needs to be paid by everyone upon arrival. Cancellation of exchange will take place if fee is not paid. Board may vary depending on the student demand for the month!
Unilaterals pay 400 Euro for JULY & AUGUST, 300 Euro for SEPTEMBER and 250 Euro for other months. Cancellation of exchange will take place if fee is no
Social Program An entertaining and cultural social programme shall be organized during the months of July and August. Contact people will meet up with you up to 3 times a week...students have the opportunity to set up their own social programme as well during the days where the social programme is not booked.

There is no social program during the other months...but you will surely make friends with maltese students or international students who are doing an elective program!
Substitutions We must be notified of the replacement student at LEAST four weeks before the clerkship is to begin.

The replacement student must provide all of the required and supplementary documents.
Cancellations Please contact the NEO regarding cancellations at least 5 weeks before start of exchange.

Please request Invitation Letters in advance.
Special remarks Students shall be assigned to a consultant’s firm where they will be joining other Maltese students.

Students shall not be allowed to change their assigned firm after commencement of their clerkship.

Incoming students are requested to bring their own white coat, stethoscope and shoes for the operating theatre with them.

Dress MUST be smart and respectable!!

The dates stated on the CA’s issued by the MMSA Exchange Office are binding.

Accommodation outside calendar months cannot be guaranteed.

Students are expected to bring their own bed sheets and pillow cases.

The Exchange Committee CANNOT provide free accommodation or board for any friends, relatives, fiancees or family of incoming students.

The MMSA Exchange Office reserves the right to cancel any clerkship if it receives any complaints of misconduct or unethical practice both in hospital as well as at the lodgings.
The students responsible for such acts are held liable for any damage incurred during the clerkship.

Students accepted for a clerkship in Malta are expected to know and respect the exchange conditions.
