Level of studies Previous clinical experience is essential in area of clerkship
Type of Clerkship Bilateral Clinical exchanges ONLY!
Languages Strictly English speaking, with a strong hold of the language. Language certificate may be requested with or after AF: either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

Native speakers of English from UK, USA, Canada or countries where major exams are in English will not require additional proof of language ability.

All other countries, please check with LEC when applying.
Duration of Clerkship 4 weeks
Working Conditions Working hours depend on the hospital, department and supervisor's schedule. Typical working hours are Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.
Dress code:
- NO White Coats
- Smart & Professional dress:
Men: Shirts, trousers, smart shoes. Ties are debateable: some consultants prefer you to wear a tie, others don't. Bring a few just in case!
Women: NO short skirts or plunging necklines. NO open toed shoes/very high heels. Hair should be tied up.
We also operate a "bare below the elbow policy": so sleeves must be rolled up, no watches/bracelets/rings. The idea is to minimise the spread of infection.

Most specialties available. We can not guarantee your first choice specialty because home students are usually given priority.
Periods & Towns Exchanges must be a direct swap of students- so that Outgoings and Incomings travel at the same time (apart from Leicester - see Leicester)

Application documents & deadline Medsin-UK is digitally enabled. We accept digital documents (scanned documents), but you must bring the originals (paper documents) with you on arrival. At the MARCH MEETING (MM), we must receive either your PAPER or your DIGITAL documents!

11. Documentary Evidence of Immunisation status of Hepitatis B, Tetanus, Polio, TB, Mumps, Measles, Varicella and Rubella

LONDON RUMS, LONDON ST GEORGES & NOTTINGHAM also require: Criminal Records Evidence (professionally translated into English)

LEICESTER also require: Letter of Acknowledgement* : the UK outgoing student needs to receive an official letter of acknowledgement from the hosting institution (not from the IFMSA) acknowledging their placement and providing a contact name and number at least 8 weeks in advance.

ALL documents marked with a * must be stamped and on letter headed paper

ALL documents must be translated into English.

ALL health documents (inc. health questionnaires) should be placed in a sealed envelope for CONFIDENTIALITY.

!!!IMPORTANT!!!Deadline for ALL documents is MM of that season. E.g. for the 2010-2011 season: the AF & documents must be sent by MM 2010 even if the exchange is taking place much later in the season (e.g. 2011). Failure to do so will mean that you miss your cycle & may have to wait unt

Insurance Health insurance and medical liability insurance are MANDATORY. Medical liability insurance can be provided for free by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) in the UK. Forms can be found on the NEO yahoogroups in the UK section of the additional documents file or on their website (www.mps.org.uk) under 'Overseas student membership'.

Pocket Money None
Board & Lodging Free on a bilateral arrangement.
Lodging: usually a room in a student house or basic hospital accommodation. This depends on the lodging of the outgoing student and depends on the city.
Board: The student will be given 25 pounds per week to cover food or will receive an "Oyster card" worth 100 pounds for travel (St. George's).
Social Program Depending on LC. Most don't offer a structured programme, but help the student organise his/her time here.
Substitutions Not generally accepted - unless a long period of notice is given (minimum 4 months).
Cancellations Please notify the NEO as soon as possible
Visas An electronic Invitation Letter & Support Letter to the Embassy will be sent with the Card of Acceptance. If a paper IL (with signature/NMO stamp/Institution stamp/Lodging address etc) is required, please let the NEO know in advance of the March meeting so that the paper copy can be exchanged along with the documents. Paper ILs are not sent automatically so please ask for them if needed!
Verification of ILs by the Foreign Office & Embassy costs approx 50 GBP and needs to be done far in advance of Visa application - so please notify the NEO ASAP.
Special remarks DATES IN THE UK ARE STRICT AND CANNOT BE CHANGED. We can not accommodate students either before or after these dates.

Students allocated to NOTTINGHAM and LEICESTER must be in their penultimate or final year of medical school.

Students allocated to ALL OTHER medical schools must have completed AT LEAST ONE year of clinical study.

LONDON ST GEORGES ALSO REQUIRES THAT NON EU STUDENTS PROVIDE FINANCIAL EVIDENCE
