Professional Exchange : Exchange Conditions of IFMSA-The Netherlands(The Netherlands)
Level of studies Students in the clinical phase of their study, at least third year students
Type of Clerkship Clinical
Languages The main language is Dutch. Communication with the patients is in Dutch, but the doctors try to take you in to account as much as they can by talking in English to the students.
Duration of Clerkship 4 weeks
Working Conditions 8 hours a day, 5 days a week

The clerkship lasts 4 weeks. Shorter attendance without asking for permission to the Local Exchange Officers AND National Exchange Officer will result in not receiving a certificate and can even lead to expulsion. (depending on the reason)

If you want to stay 3 weeks instead of 4, write this already on your AF and notify the NEO, we will see if we can still consider your application.
Disciplines All common clinical fields are available, except psychiatry and alternative medicine.
Check the wikipage to see which departments are generally available in which city.

AF's with less than 4 chosen departments will not be accepted! We try to place students in one of their desired departments but there's no guarantee.

The same goes for the choice of cities, fill out all three desired places. We still cannot give you guarantee.
Periods & Towns Please note that we cannot accept all students in July and August, so be soon to submit your application if you want to be there. We have around 100 places and only ACCEPT 50% OF THE STUDENTS IN JULY AND AUGUST.

Please be aware that we cannot always put everybody in the city and department of choice, due to the amount of places we have! Especially in July and August this is hard.

Estimated available places per University/ City:
AMSTERDAM; University of Amsterdam: 12 places
AMSTERDAM; Free University: 11 places
GRONINGEN; University of Groningen: 13 places
LEIDEN; Leiden University: 15 places
NIJMEGEN; Radboud University Nijmegen: 13 places
ROTTERDAM; Erasmus University Rotterdam: 15 places
UTRECHT; University of Utrecht: 10 places
Application documents & deadline Unfortunately we can only accept students who have a passport from a country within the European Union! (except Bulgaria and Romenia). Because of governmental problems we cannot except other students.

We can only accept students who aren't graduated yet. According to Dutch law, only students can do an exchange in the Netherlands. To check this we require a certificate of enrollment.

Af's should be send 3 MONTHS before the exchange. Otherwise it is impossible to arrange the exchange for the students. AF's that are send after the deadline will be returned.

Substitutions The substitute must accept the same department and period and is preferably from the same gender. All changes must be reported to the NEO.

If a student is late, his/her clerkship may be cancelled if the student has not informed IFMSA-NL about the delay of arrival. The NEO must be informed about the reasons for arriving late, at least three weeks in advance of the clerkship! Emergencies can be an exception, consult the NEO-incoming.
Cancellations Please do inform us as soon as possible!!! We prefer substitutes to cancellations.

If the student cancels the exchange after the CA is send, the contract will be considered as a used contract. Substitution is possible.
Visas IMPORTANT!!

Due to governmental problems we can only accept students who have a passport from a country within the European Union (except Bulgaria and Romenia)
Special remarks 1. MRSA tests will mostly be done again upon arrivel in the hospital in the Netherlands. It is important though to test yourself in your homecountry as well. Because otherwise you cannot start your exchange in time. So please do the test in your own country and send the results as soon as you have them (2 weeks before the exchange)

2. Exchange students work under the same conditions as Dutch students, and must obey all regulations at the hospital. Exchange students who don't show up without letting the department or LEO know, run the risk of not getting their certificate. Students have to be in time and participate actively!!

3. Students arriving with friends, family or pets, without informing the LEOs and NEO-incoming first will immediately send back.

4. Every student should fill out an evaluation form after finishing the clerkship, but before leaving the Netherlands.

5. Students not showing up at the arranged date cause a lot of trouble and will loose accommodation and/or position at the hospital after three days without any announcement.
